Your Data Is “Fine”. Here's What 'One Place' Actually Means

The last piece I wrote made the case that your data usually isn’t the problem, the coordination and workflow around it is. When analysis depends on manual exports, spreadsheet cleanup, and waiting on whoever’s the resident “Excel expert,” insight only moves as fast as the slowest person in that chain. Worth extending that argument one level further: what does it actually look like when customer and market information is genuinely unified in one place?

Here’s the honest answer: it’s much more than just a CRM.

A real single source of truth has to hold everything that touches the customer relationship, not just the pipeline stage and contact record. Sure that means the traditional CRM data, but also everything generated through marketing automation, every campaign, every sales touch, every customer experience interaction.

If a company is running a survey or collecting direct customer feedback, that data needs to land in the same place too, not in a separate survey tool that nobody remembers to cross-reference later. Same with market research: if you’re running research to understand where the broader market is headed, that data belongs alongside everything else, not off in its own silo waiting for someone to manually stitch it together.

And it can’t stop at what the system generates internally either. A real source of truth has to reach outward, into the project management tools tracking implementations, the systems handling customer support, even financial systems, so that when someone wants to compare campaign performance against actual revenue impact, or line up a support trend against a piece of market research, the comparison is just there. Not a project, not a week of exports and formula-matching, just there.

That’s the real difference between “we have a lot of data” and “we have one source of truth.” The first one is just a pile. The second one is a system that aggregates net-new data as it’s created, whether that’s from a customer survey, a market research project, a routine sales interaction, or a marketing campaign, and simultaneously pulls in everything else happening across the business to give it the proper context.

Good analysis was never really about having more data. It’s about not needing to go hunting for it in the first place.
